Dear Parents,Happy New Year – despite the snow! Here are the subjects that your child will be learning about during this Spring term in Eagles class. Numeracy: We continue to follow the Primary Framework for Mathematics developing mental and written strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, applying these skills to real life problems. We will be looking at fractions and their relation to decimals and percentages.  We will also be doing some work relating to shape, number patterns and sequences. English: Following the guidelines of the Primary Framework for Literacy we will firstly be looking at narrative poetry, followed by myths, legends and fables from a range of cultures.  Our non-fiction writing will involve work on report writing and explanation texts. Grammar, spelling and handwriting are continuous throughout the term, and we shall also be reading class novels together. Science: Our topics this term include Gases All Around Us and Changing State, where we will pay particular attention to the importance of the Water Cycle. History: A study of Ancient Greece is the children’s main topic this term. We will learn about what life was like during this period of history, and the legacy of the Ancient Greeks that still influences our lives today. Our topic work will be closely linked to many aspects of Literacy, Numeracy and Art this term, and should prove to be an exciting area of study with plenty of scope for research. ICT: Our topics for the Spring term are Multi-Media Presentations and Graphical Modelling.  The children will be using the skills that they develop to aid their Science, Numeracy, Topic and Art work throughout the term. Art: Our artwork will involve making Greek vases using papier mache and designing and painting pictures onto them.  Design Technology: We will be designing and making our own Greek buildings, based on the structure of the Parthenon and paying particular attention to architecture and ratio.

Music: The children will be learning about Blues this term, paying particular attention to chord structure and rhythm. P.E: Outdoor games will be Football and indoors will be Gymnastics and Dance. PE days are Mondays (indoors), Tuesdays (outdoors) and Thursdays (indoors).  Children will need their correct PE kits in on those days please.   R.E: This half term, our topic is Creation and Environment, which will begin with some Godly Play work.  During the second half term we will be looking at The Easter Story, particularly focusing on suffering. PSHE: Our topics this term are ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to be me’ which focuses on raising self-esteem.  French: We will be focussing on speaking and listening skills, learning about weather and the seasons and farm animals, as well as consolidating all of the skills and phrases learnt last term. Each night of the week your child will be given a piece of homework to complete. Your child should spend 20-30 minutes on their homework. The schedule is as follows: Monday – Spellings to learn for a test on the following Friday.Tuesday – An English or Topic task.Wednesday – A Numeracy task.Thursday – Times Tables and Division Facts in preparation for a weekly test.Friday – Reading. Reading should be continuous throughout the week and an adult is required to write a comment in your child’s Reading Record book. Please support your child as much as you can with their homework. Some nights they will require help, but it is equally important for them to develop the ability to work independently. Please add your comments to homework sheets sent home if there are any problems. All homework should be handed in each Friday morning.  If your child is unable to complete their homework, please send a note explaining the reasons. In the absence of a note, your child may be asked to stay in at playtime to complete the work. Useful websites:Topic : www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ancientgreece & www.ancient-greece.co.uk/Numeracy: http://www.coxhoe.durham.sch.uk/Curriculum/Numeracy.htm  Literacy: http://www.coxhoe.durham.sch.uk/Curriculum/Literacy.htmGeneral: http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/ & http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/parents/search/ Our Sharing Assemblies for this term will take place on Friday 29th January and Friday 19th March.
