Dear Parents

Curriculum Letter for Year 3

Autumn TermSwans Hello to you all and welcome back. I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. We have a very busy and productive term ahead of us with some interesting topics and new routines to get used to. You will find these new details outlined below. Firstly, all children in key stage 2 are expected to complete homework every evening after school. This should take no longer than 20 minutes. Because we are adapting to this new routine, we will gradually introduce the homework during this half term. We will start with Maths homework on a Thursday and reading on a Friday this week. Followed by spellings, week beginning 14th September and so on. A timetable of this is written below; Monday           -           Spellings. Starting on 14.09.05.                                    (Children will have a spelling test on a Thursday). Tuesday           -           English. Starting on 22.09.05.Wednesday      -           Times tables/Topic (Practise on Friday) Starting on 30.9.05.Thursday          -           Maths. Starting on 07.09.05Friday              -           Reading and Finishing off (Some children may be asked to finish any incomplete work at home). Starting 08.09.05. I will give out an overview for the week on Mondays and all homework must be handed in on Fridays. It is also helpful for your child to continue to read daily. Your child will also have the opportunity to change their Reading books every day after morning play time. I encourage the children to take on this responsibility themselves by remembering when they have finished their book. Please can you remind your child at home when they need to do this to help us establish this into our classroom routines. Details of the work to be covered this autumn term until Christmas are as follows:

Science - Teeth and eating – We identify the three types of teeth and how we keep our teeth healthy.

Magnets and springs – We will learn about the forces involved and will design and test our ideas. History - Invaders and Settlers: The Romans – We learn about why the Romans came to Britain and the changes that they have made.

Design Technology - Photo Frames – We design and make our own photo frames using balsa wood and cardboard. We will use these to frame our Roman mosaics.

Art - Drawing and painting – This is also on going throughout the year. We work on use and control of pencils, charcoal, paints and pastels.

Printing – We will be building our own printing blocks using a variety of materials. We will be desinging and making mosaics.

Religion - Prayers – Children will learn about the Lord’s prayer and other prayers that are used in church.

Christmas Angels – Children learn about the Angel Gabriel and the message that he brought. Music will focus on Roman marching. French – Miss Griffiths will be teaching the children French greetings, numbers and how to say how old they are. Personal and Social Health Education (PSHE) – We will focus on New beginnings and cooperation. Literacy – The focus will be on stories with familiar settings, adventure and mystery stories, performance poetry and reports. Numeracy – The children will continue to learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. They will apply the skills they are developing to problem solving activities.  ICT – The main focus for ICT lessons will be using art software to produce repeating patterns and basic programming skills using logos. The children will also be using the computers to research Romans and to present their projects. Challenge Time – There has been a lot of research into the benefits of allowing children more influence over their own learning. In response to this I have introduced challenge time. During this time the children will have a choice of a number of small projects. They will need to plan what they need to do, follow through their plan, then evaluate how well they think they have done. There are a variety of individual and group projects. Some of the projects will involve them presenting their work to the rest of the class. The challenges this term will focus mainly on Romans. Please ensure your child has their school’s PE kit in school on a Monday, you can take this home on a Friday to be washed over the weekend. We will also be swimming on a Thursdays at 10:45 while the weather is still good. The children will be learning all about Tag Rugby and Gymnastics in our PE lessons. Please ensure your child brings in a named water bottle to allow them to have access to water throughout the day. Your child will need to take their water bottle home at the end of each day. We are a healthy school and we encourage all children to eat a healthy balanced diet. Please support us in encouraging your child to bring in a healthy school snack for their mid morning break. If you are able to hear readers this term, please let me know. Also it would be helpful to have a volunteer on Thursdays to help change library books. Or may be you would like to come in to work with small groups of children. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to come and see me. I am available on the playground at 8:50 every morning. If you require a more formal appointment please see me on the playground to arrange a convenient time. Yours sincerely

Mrs C Sexton
