New Headteacher
Dear Parents,
We are pleased to inform you that Mrs Pamela Simpson has been appointed as the new Headteacher.
Mrs Simpson has had many years experience as a Headteacher and comes to us from Balksbury Junior School, Andover. She is well known to the school as she worked here earlier in her career. Some of you with older children may remember her.
We are very much looking forward to welcoming her to Kimpton School in September and know that with her enthusiasm and experience she will continue to drive the school forward.
Yours sincerely

February 2010 Newsletter
Dear Parents and Carers, 8th February, 2010 Day ClosuresAs you already know, the school will be closed for staff training on Monday 22nd February. I now have 2 further dates for your diary. These are Monday 19th April and Thursday 10th June. Arrangements for the end of the dayIt is lovely to notice that so many children are going to each other’s houses to play after school. Please can I remind parents that if your child is going home with someone different you must inform the school, either by sending in a note to the class teacher or by phoning the office. This is also the case if you get held up so you ask another parent to pick your child up for you. This will help the staff to ensure that parents always know exactly where their child is. It is surprising how many times the children form these plans without thinking to consult you! I have asked the staff to make sure that they query any arrangements that they have not been informed of. Keeping Up With Your Children CourseBefore Christmas Andover Family Learning offered a course called ‘Keeping Up With Your Children’. At the time only a few parents were interested. However, we understand that December can be an incredibly busy month, so we would like to offer you another opportunity.Andover Family Learning will do a workshop at the school on Monday 29th March. This will be followed by 6 Monday afternoons, dates to be confirmed. Further details will follow nearer the time. If you are interested in finding out more please return the slip at the end of this letter. Home Access courseOn 11 January 2010 the Government announced the Home Access scheme for what they term ‘low income families’ who have a child in Key Stage 2 or 3. If you are in receipt of certain benefits you could qualify for a grant to buy a computer and/or a minimum of one year’s internet access. The programme is aimed at those who need it most and targets families that do not have access to a computer or the internet at home.
For an application form families need to phone 03332001004 If you need more information please follow the link http://www.homeaccess.org.uk/ Parking and safety at the beginning and end of the dayIt has been brought to my attention that some cars have been parked on the zig zag lines and passing places outside the school. Please remember that these lines are there for the safety of all of the children. If there are circumstances, such as a medical condition, that mean you need to park in such close proximity to the school please inform the office and we will give you a permit to park in the school car park.Staff have also noticed that an increasing number of people are cutting across the car park at the end of the day. This is a particularly busy time of day with the taxis and members of staff leaving the premises. Please use the pedestrian entrance so that we can keep everyone safe. Please can I also remind you to keep a close eye on any of your pre-school children while you are waiting to collect older siblings. There has been a case of damage being done to school property recently. But, more importantly, we do not want them to fall and hurt themselves. The playtrail is available for them to use under your supervision on Fridays only. On a personal noteI am sure that many of you are wondering whether I indulged too much over the Christmas holidays. I am, in fact, expecting again but thank you for being so tactful. The governors have already got plans for finding my replacement well under way and we will keep you posted. Christmas dinner photosMany of you have already asked for copies of the photos that we are displaying in the entrance area. These will be available for order until half term at a cost of 20p per copy. We will then get them processed for you and you should receive them soon after the holidays. If you have already ordered a photo but have not paid for it please will you send the money to the office by Wednesday 10th February. Yours sincerelyC. Bad weather forecast
5th January 2010 Dear Parents, We have just been advised of adverse weather conditions for late this afternoon onwards. There is a prediction of heavy snow from this evening and throughout the night with up to 20cm by tomorrow morning. We hope to be open for school as normal, but this will obviously depend on the conditions in the morning. IF THE SCHOOL IS CLOSED it will be put on our website by 8am tomorrow morning and will also be broadcast on the following radio stations – Andover Sound (106.4FM), 210FM, Spire FM and BBC Radio Solent. Please listen to the bulletins on these radio stations rather than telephone the school office if possible. Hopefully we will see you all tomorrow. Please take care on the roads, we would rather you were late than have an accident. Yours sincerely C. SextonActing Headteacher

Autumn Newsletter 4
16th November 2009
Dear Parents,
Autumn 2009 Newsletter 4
As the pace speeds up towards Christmas, I thought it was time to send out a news letter with some reminders about dates for end of term productions and other exciting events. Before that, I would like to mention a few other things. Book fair:
Thank you to all those who supported this year’s book fair. It was an outstanding success and as you will already know, we raised £812.35 for school, which was even better than last year! It wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work undertaken by Mrs Gibbs and Mrs Forwood and I am sure you would like me to thank them both for their efforts. If you have any comments to help next year’s be even more successful, I know they would like to hear from you. Milk bottle tops:
Those of you who were with us last Easter will no doubt remember the massive milk bottle top competition we held to see which class could make the longest line in the playground. Although we are not planning to hold another event, I introduced to the children Mrs Ailsa Walters from “Gift of Sight” which is the organisation who benefited from the collection. She was able to explain to the children what happens to all the bottle tops once they have been collected. The children want to continue collecting so if you would like to send them in when ever you have a small amount, Emily and Henry Gibbs will send them off to Southampton for you. Christingle candles:
Revd. Ann came into school last week to introduce the Christingle Candles again. Instead of sending one home for each family, this year she is holding a class competition to see which class can collect the most small change in their candle. The children can bring in anything from £1 coins downwards and the money will go to the Children’s Society. Internet safety:
Last week we held an internet safety presentation for parents in the school hall. Unfortunately, this was at very short notice so was only attended by two parents. However, they said it was excellent, so we will be offering it again in the near future, Health and safety:
This topic is always in the news and as a Hampshire school, we fully follow the guidance offered by the county. You may be interested to know that we undertake a range of risk assessments for a variety of situations and especially when we take children off-site. In addition we train staff in first aid, off-site activities, shallow water, fire safety, marshalling, fire extinguishers, COSHH, working at height and we have a critical incident plan. Staff are up-dated with the latest news every week. All staff, Governors and regular volunteers are CRB checked and mini-bus drivers are MIDAS trained. As you can see we take the safety of your children very seriously and will continue to do so. Productions:
The productions this year will take place on two different dates because of other events happening beyond our control.
Key Stage 1 (Wrens, Robins and Herons). Parents and families are invited to come and watch. on Wednesday 9th December at 2.15p.m.
Key Stage 2 (Swans, Kestrels, Eagles and Kingfishers) production will take place on Thursday 10th December at 6.00 p.m. Church Service:
This is to remind you that our annual Christmas service at Kimpton Church will be at 9.45 a.m. on Wednesday 16th December . Parents are very welcome to join us and we would appreciate your support in walking the children to and from Church on that morning. Please ensure that your child brings a coat on that day. Christmas lunch
This will be on 17th December and all the children are welcome to take part. Every child will join their key stage in the hall even if they are having a packed lunch and will be able to wear their Christmas hat made at home. Look out for details about the hats, nearer the time. Pantomime
We will be welcoming the pantomime into school on Tuesday 15th December in the afternoon to which all children are invited. The school office will send out details about the cost very soon. End of term
The last day of the Autumn term will be on Friday 18th December and parents are reminded to collect their child at 1.15 p.m. School will re-open for the new year on Monday 4th January 2010 at the usual time.
We look forward to see you at the events during this term.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs. J.A. Glover

Autumn Newsletter 2
19th October 2009. Dear Parents, Autumn 2009 Newsletter 2 Before we finish for the half term break, there are a few items of interest and a few polite requests. Thruxton Circuit: Thank you to all those who have been sending in sponsor money from the event we held in September. If you are still collecting, please try and send in the money as soon as possible so that the PTA can issue a final amount. PTA: The PTA held their annual meeting last week and sadly, despite being well attended, they were unable to secure either a “Chair” or a “Secretary”. This does mean that technically, we can no longer hold any further fund raising events. Therefore, they will be holding another meeting on 11th November at 3.30 p.m. to try and fill these posts. The members from this year will continue to be involved in the PTA and will help anyone taking on these new roles. Therefore, please come forward if you possibly can as it would be very disappointing if we were forced into abandoning the PTA. PLEASE don’t let this happen! I would like to thank Mrs Blackburn (Chair), Dr Huggins (Secretary) and Mrs Cleall (Treasurer) for standing this year as well as the many other very supportive parents who have helped in the background by running events, providing refreshments, supporting the treasurer and attending meetings. Your efforts are very much appreciated and the children of Kimpton School have benefited enormously from all of your hard work. Gifted and Talented: We are hosting the G+T music event for other local schools tomorrow (20th October) and the children attending will be putting on a small concert at around 2.30 p.m. in the hall. If you would like to come and see what they have been doing, you are more than welcome to pop in. Workshop for parents: In the last newsletter, I advertised a workshop called “Keeping up with your children” to be held at our school from 4th November – 9th December2009 from 9.30-11.30 a.m. . We have not had any response to this and I was wondering whether parents were mixing this with the Maths evening advertised on the same newsletter. If you would like to attend, please return the slip below. When we have held this before, parents have found it very useful. There is a crèche available if needed. Now for the reminders! Parking: Several parents have mentioned to me recently about other parents using the “zig-zag” lines to either park or drop off / collect their children. In addition, there have been some incidents of blocking the free flow of traffic at key times. As ever, I ask that incidents should be reported directly to the police as they will take more notice of you and that parents show consideration for each other outside of school. Absences/ Late comers: If your child is away from school because of illness, may I remind you that the phone call on the first day must be followed by a letter on your child’s return. Without this, we have to mark it as an unauthorised absence and this goes on your child’ records. Every day, we have some children arriving late and some children are late every day. This is recorded on the register and the Education Welfare Officer (EWO) will pick this up and contact you. Story teller: If you have a child in KS2 (Swans- Kingfishers), you will know that we had a story teller in school as part of our RRR week. (Respect, Rights and Responsibility). Unfortunately, a number of parents decided not to make the voluntary contribution of £2.80 and as a result the school has had to take the deficit out of our already very stretched budget. Although “voluntary contribution” does mean voluntary, we cannot run these extra curricular events requested by so many parents, because we just don’t have the money. Therefore, if you feel that you could send in the money we would be grateful, but without your support, we will have to cut back on some other planned “extras”. Nail varnish: Can I remind parents that nail varnish is not part of our uniform and request that it is removed before the children come into school. Healthy snacks: As you know we are a Healthy School and part of that is that the children do not bring in sweets, chocolate (biscuits or bars), crisps etc into school for morning break. Unfortunately, we know that some children have started to do this again as we have the evidence in the bins! Please help us to remain a Healthy School. Day closure: As you already know, we have a day closure for staff training on Friday 23rd October, so the children will finish at 3.30p.m. on Thursday 22nd October. School will re-open on Monday 2nd November 2009 at8.55 a.m. Have a pleasant half term holiday. Yours sincerely, Mrs. J.A. Glover Head Teacher __________________________________________________________________Keeping up with your children: I would like to attend the workshops from 4th November to 9th December 9.30-11.30 at Kimpton school. swine flu
7th September 2009 Dear Parent/Carer Latest swine flu guidelines I am writing to update you with the latest information on the current swine flu pandemic. It is hoped that the effects of the pandemic will be minimal this term. Nevertheless, we have put plans in place to ensure we are prepared and it is important that all parents/carers are aware of the correct actions to take and where to go for guidance, should the need arise As you may be aware, the Government has moved to a treatment phase to manage the current swine flu pandemic. This means that the NHS is now focussing its efforts on treating people who have the virus. School disruptions/closuresThe updated Government guidance on schools is that they will not close because of individual cases of swine flu. However, schools may need to take the decision to close if local circumstances warrant it, e.g. if a significant number of staff are ill. This decision would be made as a last resort and only if the school is unable to guarantee the safety of pupils, based on a risk assessment. If we do experience staff shortages due the pandemic, there could be some disruption to the normal school timetable. Temporary arrangements may be required to ensure the school is able to stay open. We will try to keep any disruption to a minimum and keep you updated if this situation arises. It is important that we have the correct contact details for all parents and carers, so we can keep you informed of any disruptions and contact you if your child falls ill during the day. Please can you check that the contact details we hold for you are correct and advise any changes For the latest information on emergency school closures visit http://www3.hants.gov.uk/schoolclosures
SymptomsAlthough I realise you may be concerned about the spread of swine flu, I would like to reassure you that there is no cause for alarm. The most common symptoms of swine flu are fever, sore throat, diarrhoea, headache, feeling generally unwell and a dry cough – in other words, symptoms very similar to ordinary seasonal flu. Most people recover within a week, even without anti-viral treatment. Although symptoms have generally proved mild, a small number of patients will develop more serious illness. Many of these people have other underlying health conditions that put them at increased risk. The advice from the NHS is that, unless you have flu-like symptoms, there is no need to stop your normal everyday activities, such as going to work or school.
If your child is illIf you feel your child is displaying flu like symptoms, they should stay at home. Contact the National Pandemic Flu Service for an assessment. You can either telephone the Service on 0800 1 513 100 or use the on-line assessment tool at www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk. Please inform the school, as per normal absence reporting procedures, on 01264 772297
PreventionAlthough the focus is now on treatment, there are still steps we can all take to help prevent swine flu from spreading. Please follow good practice hygiene advice from the NHS, which asks that people ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ when they sneeze or cough. This means you should:
- catch your cough or sneeze in a tissue;
- throw the tissue in the bin quickly;
- wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or waterless hand hygiene products; and
- clean hard surfaces (like door handles and remote controls) frequently with a normal cleaning product.

Autumn Newsletter 1
1st September 2009.
Dear Parents, Autumn Term 2009. Newsletter 1
Welcome back after the summer holidays and hopefully you will have managed to have some dry days. To those of you joining Kimpton for the first time, I hope that you will enjoy being part of our school.
You will no doubt have noticed the changes to the front of the school. Please bear with us for the next couple of weeks until everything is finished. The office staff are working in a very difficult environment at the moment, so it might take a little longer to answer any queries. Thank you for your understanding.
As usual, there is a busy term ahead of us and hopefully, this newsletter will give you some key dates and keep you informed of some of the events. Meet your child’s new teacher:
Once again we will give you the opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher, hear about what will be happening in the classroom and remind you of some of the key messages applicable to everyone. The date for this event is Monday 7th September with the times as follows:
There will be no need for Wrens parents to attend as they have different arrangements. Staff changes:
As you will know from last term, we welcome Ms Anna Birkby (Herons) and Mrs Muriel Knowles (Eagles). Mrs Hutchinson will be part-time and will cover classes when staff are on courses; Mrs Sexton will be in Swans and Ms McAloon will be in Robins; Ms Griffiths will be teaching French throughout the school. Star of the Week:
This term, we will be changing the focus of our Star of the Week award. As part of “Building Learning Power” which is a strategy to help your children to become more effective learners, we will be rewarding “resourcefulness” and “reflectiveness”. The children will be hearing all about this and here is a brief explanation about what this will mean for your child.
As a resourceful learner, they will be learning how to question effectively and understand how curiosity is a positive element in their learning. They will be expected to consider how ideas linked together enhance their understanding and the part played by their imaginations. They will be helped to think methodically and to use resources productively.
As a reflective learner, they will be expected to plan their next steps in learning by revising and adapting what they do in order to learn from experiences. This will help them to understand their own learning style.
We are hoping that you too will be part of helping your child to become a better learner by commenting on their reflectiveness and resourcefulness in their homework, during Pupil Led Learning Reviews and at the Parents’ Evenings.
The children will link these two areas with “Tiptoe the Elephant” ( reflectiveness) and “Speedy the Tortoise” ( resourcefulness) who will be visiting their classrooms regularly! Clubs:Clubs will be starting in the week beginning 14th September and the children will be hearing what’s on offer this term. Please complete the form below and return it to the school no later than Wednesday 9th September. The Saints (Tuesday) football club starts on 8th September, please reply immediately. Sponsored cycle/ walk:
You will be receiving a letter soon this event which will take place on the afternoon of 24th September Like last year, it will involve the whole school and should be an enjoyable event. Please support us if you can. Day closures:
The school will be closed for the children on Monday 28th September and Friday 23rd October, when the staff will be receiving additional training. Open Day for Prospective Parents:
If you know of any parents with pre-school children who would like to come and look around our school, we are having an Open Day on Friday 25th September 10.00-11.30a.m. They will need to book a place by phoning the school office. Parents Evenings:
These will be on Monday 19th October and Thursday 22nd October. You will receive a booking form later this term. Half Term:
